Specifically, opposing a woman’s right to choice in having an abortion is a way to perform a kind of fundamental sanctity that appeals to conservatives. This comports with the intrinsic cynicism of ideology in that this performance has no immediate cost to those espousing it. Men, specifically, cannot have abortions, so the cost of opposing them is minimal. Moreover that ideological cynicism can easily admit for personal exceptions. So the hypocrisy inherent in privately procuring an abortion while publicly decrying abortion is totally in line with how ideology functions. Ideology attempts to reconcile the fundamentally self-absorbed id, with the social demands of the super ego. As Slavoj Žižek claims “renounce everything as ideology demands, and you can have it all”.(Žižek & Fiennes 2011) Ideology functions as symbols whose meaning changes as necessary to allow the fundamental drives, such as for sex, food and survival, to be realized.

My reasoning behind this analysis comes from the work of two thinkers. Žizek argues for this conception of ideology, as arising from a philosophy grounded in psychoanalytic theory. The notion of sanctity as a category of moral emotion comes from the work of Jonathan Haidt.

Haidt offers 5 categories of moral emotion:(Graham et al, 2009)

Care/harm

Fairness/cheating

Loyalty/betrayal

Authority/subversion

Sanctity/degradation.

The first two categories are broadly shared by both those self-described as liberals, and self-described conservatives in the US context. However, the last three values are relatively unimportant to Liberals, while these remain strong moral emotions for conservatives. It is the last of these, Sanctity, that I am attempting to address in this post.

The fetus is portrayed in anti-choice arguments as the most innocent, most defenceless of lives. It has no power or possibility to choose evil or good. It is almost, in christian terms, pre-lapsarian. Indeed, the sinfulness of humans occurs with their birth in most Christian theology.I those terms is fairly easy to interpret the fetus as a symbol/site of sanctity. Thus arises the conservative rejection of abortion, as an attack on a fundamental symbol of religious sanctity.

By opposing abortion as an attack on sanctity, its opponents can claim a fundamental, unassailable commitment to sanctity, a cardinal moral emotion. <span class="s1" style="font-family: ".sfuitext"; font-size: 17.41pt;">The most recent Hellboy film suffers from a week script that betrays the talents of a talented cast and competent director. It attempts to explore the plight of the outsider, both as an individual and a group. Yet it fails to follow through the emotional arcs to a logical and satisfying conclusion. The result is that David Harbour’s nuanced portrayal of Hellboy is not supported by the events portrayed. The clumsy use of exposition—conjuring up dead characters to explain plot holes—also conveys a sense of lazy writing.

<div class="p2" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17.4px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 20.8px;">
<span class="s1" style="font-family: ".sfuitext"; font-size: 17.41pt;">

<div class="p1" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17.4px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span class="s1" style="font-family: ".sfuitext"; font-size: 17.41pt;">An example of a failed emotional arc is Hellboy’s relationship to his nemesis, the witch Numia. She comes to him in a vision, and calls for him to join her as her consort, and free all the magic folk from their oppression at the hands of humans. Given that earlier in the film, an allied anti-paranormal group had ambushed him and attempted to brutally assassinate him, we can can see how he later storms out of his father’s office, accusing Ian McShane’s character of “turning me into a weapon...to slaughter my brother’s and sisters!” After asking repeatedly of his adoptive father, “,then what” McShane’s Prof Bruttenholme tells him he will kill the next enemy after that. Yet in the next scene with Numia, all feelings of romance and solidarity with other magic folk vanishes, and he coldly shoots her in the head, graphically portrayed. David Harbours Hellboy as working-class philosopher is reduced by weak plotting to a sociopath, at best just following orders.

<div class="p2" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17.4px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 20.8px;">

<div class="p1" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17.4px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span class="s1" style="font-family: ".sfuitext"; font-size: 17.41pt;">The themes of a conflicted hero, trying to suppress his origins and live in a world hostile to his kind were also explored in the previous attempts to bring Hellboy to the screen. Hellboy as a working-class poet resisting a restrictive system gave room for a certain magic. Visually, Benicio Del Toro’s monsters were beautiful, if terrifying. The notion that they lived, partially hidden, around non-magical human’s left us with the possibility of a modus vivendi, one which humans had betrayed. In Neil Marshall’s Hellboy (2019), the action is competent, but the moral and emotional stakes are washed away and forgotten in almost comical seas of gore.

<div class="p2" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17.4px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 20.8px;">
<span class="s1" style="font-family: ".sfuitext"; font-size: 17.41pt;">

<div class="p1" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17.4px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span class="s1" style="font-family: ".sfuitext"; font-size: 17.41pt;">The political background to this story, conflict with a perceived other, attempts to address the rise of contemporary nationalism and racist tropes. But it ultimately fails to do just to this ambition. This is because it’s villains are not merely flawed, but simply evil. They exist only to avenge those that had thwarted their evil. Thus Numia is not an ambitious leader eager to free her people, as with the Elvin prince in Hellboy: The Golden Army (Benitio Del Toro, 2008). Rather, her throngs are cannonfodder for her own narcissism. She declares that she will “kill everyone he loves” to force Hellboy to join her. Later, she kills her most loyal henchman when his annunciated objectives run counter to hers.

<div class="p2" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17.4px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 20.8px;">
<span class="s1" style="font-family: ".sfuitext"; font-size: 17.41pt;">

<div class="p1" style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; color: #454545; font-family: ".SF UI Text"; font-size: 17.4px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<span class="s1" style="font-family: ".sfuitext"; font-size: 17.41pt;"><span style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; font-family: ".SFUIText"; font-size: 17pt;">Ultimately, the most recent attempt to bring Hellboy to cinema lacks the charm and humour of the previous two films. A crude attempt at a darker portrayal, and the lack of emotional depth in the plot leaves this version unsatisfying. This despite a talented and charming cast of David Harbour, Sasha Lane and Daniel Dae Kim. If a sequel were attempted, and that was clearly in the minds of the writers, Andrew Cosby and Hellboy creator, Mike Mignola, this cast deserves a better and more tighter, more consistent script to work with.

Consider an out-of-control train as an analogy for contemporary climate change:

The Philipa Foote's trolley problem creates an artificial situation of choosing action, or inaction, with no good outcomes. It is at best an inexact analogy as we are riding on the trolley. If the term anthropogenic is an appropriate adjective for the climate change happening around us, then perhaps it is better to say we are that train.
At the least, we are on the trolley, and we have the choice of jamming on the breaks, causing the vehicle to jump the tracks, injuring many riders and killing others. We can choose to let the cart continue on its way, until it jumps the track and injures many riders and kills others. Finally, we can slow it to a stop, while we build a replacement that won’t endanger us. Then the question is how long can we take to brake. What will case the least disruption(the fewest injuries), knowing the longer we wait the more likely that a wreck will result.

For the purposes of this thought experiment, I will not engage with those that think the trolley can continue, or even accelerate. That is wishful thinking. We do not have time to entertain reductio ad absurdum arguments.

Indeed, time is the question. If we were to stop all fossil fuel use tomorrow, much of the human species would be starving in days, weeks or at most, months. We are that dependent on fossil fuels to cultivate, fertilize, transport and store food. Yet to continue on the path as we are going on would lead to a planet unable to sustain human civilization, and quite possibly any human life. The climactic effects of fossil fuel use will destroy agriculture as we know it by making much of the earth’s arable lands unusable. The time frame for this process is measured in decades to centuries.

This time frame seems long when human life occurs in temporal frames of days, weeks and months. Our economy tends to measure value in quarters, three month periods. Our lived experience is on a shorter time frame. If we don’t eat for a day, or have water for a few hours, we begin to suffer. For many, though we may save for the future, we are focussed on the rent or mortgage due at the end of the month. The trolley wreck of climate change seems too slow. Few can ignore the immediate catastrophe of loosing one’s house, due to unemployment, against the long term goal of sustaining of the climate.

How we understand these time frames is the key to selecting a time frame for change. How we disburse the pain of reducing fossil fuel consumption, and so atmospheric CO2 concentrations and catastrophic climate change is a temporal question that varies with wealth, power and privilege.

Ronald Wright’s description of how the Mayan civilization collapsed after a successful 800 year history offers a parallel perspective on an advanced civilization that doubled down on the meaning of their success, and so wrecked themselves. How we experience time as agents is worth considering in order to reveal the often unperceived effects of climate change.adamvshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16588785302134404072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514391.post-49208769587739168632017-12-25T13:35:00.001-05:002017-12-25T21:44:10.146-05:00Christmas Turkey 2017This year, I wet brined the bird, having bought it fresh from boucherie Notre Dame. The brine was a 1 1/2 cup of course sea salt, a Tbls of cracked pepper, fresh thyme, sage and rosemary. It was left to brine overnight and removed just before roasting. The bird is 15lbs, so should require 5 hours at 325F. I also received a fancy new broiling pan as a present. The bird was loosely stuffed with lemon slices, and more herbs as above. I also drizzled it with bacon fat from this morning’s breakfast. I poured two cups of chicken broth into the pan, to help with basting. The bird starts flipped over, to encourage self-basting from the fattier under-belly of the bird. At 90minutes I’ll remove it from the oven, flip it over and baste it. I will also lower the heat to 325F.

The bird will come out 90 mins from 13h10 for basting and to be flipped.

The finished pork, with sauce in the back ground

My cousin and her family were coming for a visit, and we wanted something special but informal for a dinner. Especially as they had a long drive, finally through the tangled mess that is Montreal's road repairs. I chose pulled pork and have a little photo essay to accompany it.

The pulled pork itself was purchased the day before. It was a 9lbs butt roast. It was coated with worchestershire(Woos-ta-shire) sauce then mustard. "Steak spice" was used as a dry rub, patting that on, then finally sprinkling smoked paprika to finish. The entire cut of meat, including any flaps, were coated.

The meat was wrapped in plastic wrap and left to sit over-night in the fridge.

Remove the plastic wrap before you place the pork on a foil wrapped roasting tray, and slip it in the oven.

9lbs of pork requires approximately 9 hours at 250F, so I started early to make sure I could feed the folks when they arrived. In the end, the roast required only 8 hours to reach 190F, at which point it was removed from the oven, wrapped in foil and a couple of clean towels to rest. In this case I left it for 1hour 35mins, but it requires at least an hour to reach maximum juiciness.

While the pork slow roasted, I made the barbecue sauce.

I'm in year two of my doctoral studies, and can finally begin to define myself as a Philosopher who studies the aesthetics of digital games and the ontology of play.

The family are doing well, with the boy growing like a weed. The missus is still managing a research group at the MUHC and studying to specialise in human resource management. yes, kiddies, school never stops, training is the new normal. Its generally the fastest way to acquire new skills as the world changes.

What got me writing this morning was the elf-on-a-shelf phenomenon, which is a cute pseudo-tradition that supports a cynical marketing ploy. My wife and I amused ourselves with fun ways to subvert this. Don't buy the elves, make your own. Create stories about hiring unemployed elves that are looking for work after Santa moved his workshop off shore. Have your elf-on-a-shelf engage in anti-social, irresponsible or inappropriate behavior as he vies to become the NSA's "snitch of the year".
I'm talking about those ingrates in High School. We know most don't work very hard or apparently learn very much(have you tried reading a 1st year uni student's essay, lately?). So why do we bother paying for public highschool? Let them work, I say, and if they want more than flipping burgers, they can save for high school.

Regardless, at least 1% of the population have the wherewithall to make sure their kids get a decent High School education. So there will be a future generation to lead our people, who are all a bunch of free-loaders, what with their medicare, and subsidised daycare and free elementary education.

At least now parents have to bake cookies and buy most of the children's supplies. It gets those free-loading children and their parents off their lazy asses. Children in some countries go to work. They understand the value of smashing bricks into gravel. And they learn it young, typically age 5.

So why should we pay for university educations? Or any educations? Let the kids pay for their crummy educations.

Oh yeah, we'll pay for their education or the lack off it, one way or the other.adamvshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16588785302134404072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514391.post-76475640085976350952011-10-16T13:04:00.003-04:002011-10-16T13:04:42.590-04:00Occupy Montréal: Why?
The Occupy Movement has drawn disparate campaigners for a variety of causes together. This has caused many to accuse the movement of being directionless or un-serious. In reality the people occupying Wall Street, London and other financial centers around the globe see these institutions as being the source of many global problems. While the previous global recession can immediately be linked to financial and political mismanagement of the economy, protestors also see how environmental concerns, the plight of aboriginal peoples, military actions, the stagnation of middle class incomes, the growth of impoverished underclasses in even the wealthiest nations and the continued success of dictators are all tied to a financial elite that holds undue influence over governments, democratic or not, whether international, national, regional or local.

In Canada, stricter banking regulations protected our economy from the financial mismanagement that wounded much of the world's economy. However, the current government had advocated removing those restrictions, prior to the recession. Moreover, incomes have stagnated in Canada for more than a generation, although Canadian workers productivity has shown massive gains. Like people around the world, Canadian citizens have to work more and more to earn the same income, and this in an era of massive increase of corporate profit and GDP growth. Coupling this with environmental exploitation, this isn't seen as business development, but as a return a sort of technocratic feudalism. So many Canadians see these protests as the last, best hope for maintaining political and economic justice here and around the world.

Few believe that solutions to balancing human needs, environmental limitations and a sustainable economy will be simple, but all see this elite as being responsive only to its own narrow and short-sighted interests. Even those who consider themselves capitalists do not recognise this as anything but a kleptocracy. A kleptocracy that relies on the political class of various countries to act as partners or shills for policy that benefits the 1% to the detriment of the other 99%.

Certainly, you can find funny hats, and protestors that can only ramble incoherently. But these are a sliver of those that see the far reaching ramifications of a global class that plays Monopoly with the wealth produced by an increasingly disenfranchised majority. And unfortunately some believe that by allying themselves with the "1%" they will be allowed to join it. Yet their loyalty is exploited- we only have to look toward the behavior of some Police forces in their actions toward peaceful protest. But on closer examination the majority of the Occupy movement are citizens demanding democratic representation and economic opportunities that don't rely on onerous exploitation of people or the environment.
In the last case, I have made sure that happened, as best I can, with a strong willed seven-year old. He seems to be surprised when I insist he do his homework, clean up himself and his room, and generally conduct himself as a civilized human being. But I digress.
The demands of even a single child constantly call parents.

None the less I am busy with a PhD application, developing a game and finishing a short video documentary on my friend Christopher MacLeod's sculpture. Add work as a carpenter to keep body and soul minimally funded and I am probably busier than while writing my thesis.
His mum is delayed downtown, so I've decided to make Spaghetti Carbonara. The inspiration was a Carbonara I enjoyed at an Italian resto near Atwater on Notre Dame Ouest. It featured a raw quail's egg that was mixed into the dish after serving. Tonight, I am going to play fast and loose with the recipe– and see what happens.

I start by cooking two portions of pasta.
Meanwhile I broiled bacon, red bell pepper and carrot, cut into small pieces.

I mixed egg with a half-cup of grated cheese. In this case, I used left over "Mexican Mix" from Taco night, last Saturday. Purists would call for fresh-grated Pecorino, Parmesan or Romano cheese.
More personally, I'm reflecting on what I have just achieved and what I hope to achieve in the future. Much of this is an ongoing process that will just lead to the next thing until there is no more me, rather than no more next. I hope that will be a very long time in the future.

My very good March featured winning a few bucks in a hockey pool; Completing my M.A.; and reconciling with my wife. The latter two help me vindicate myself as an okay guy. I supported myself, and my son, while completing an M.A. and working often as a carpenter, teacher and digital materials developer. My wife asked for the reconciliation, and I immediately said yes, but I didn't approach her. So far, we are all happy to be back together as a couple and a family.
As a family, we're all pretty invested in education. My wife coordinates a medical research group. I'm looking for new/additional teaching opportunities. Developing a focus for a Phd is also on the horizon.

I have started by a very simple statement "The Game is in the player". An analysis of this concept begins with Aristotle and how his doctrine of causes plays out in his discussion of psychology in his De Anima. This theoretical discussion combines my interest in aesthetics and creativity, with my M.A. thesis, especially with regards attributing agency to art objects, a line of thought I derive from the anthropologist, Alfred Gell. It also sweeps up my comparison of Nietzche's idea of Dionysian ecstasos with the experience of 'immersion' that we find in digital games. While I suspect that Aristotlean causes will fail to account for the placement of the game in the player, I think it will fail in an interesting way,setting the stage for games as performances that map onto Husserlian intersubjectivity. The creative elements of play that are discussed by biologists Neil Greenberg, the idea of 'meaning machines' as developed by computer scientist Deb Roy and asynchronous relationship of experiential phenomena to time in the work of neurologist David Eagleman provide data to consider the digital game as an aesthetic conduit to Husserl's transcendental ego. This relationship between intersubjectivity, time, rhythm and experience would employ Martin Heidegger's Being and Time but also Henri Lefebvre's Rhythmanalysis as relevant text to exploring the interaction of shared experience in digital games. Aside from continuing to explore the intentional experience, a frustrated goal of philosophy this work offers the possibility of new means to conceptualising user experience of digital games. The experience of ecstatic temporality always seems to hover around my work, whether it is philosophy, game studies or music.

By continuing to blog my research, you can follow and make comments, if you are interested. I may attempt a more elaborate blogging site for that. This is partially to learn how to use such modern web/internet technologies as PHP, Python, Joomla and Wordpress. As a humanities scholar, I haven't invested in learning such technologies but now I feel I must.

A blog on my dissertation research would be good for a project focused learning experience. I also plan to learn to program/develop games with Unity and the Ios. For fun, create music, including some for games. This all represents an attempt to integrate all my disparate activities into a whole.

Given that the Greens, NPD and Liberals are all generally more similar in policy than the Conservatives, here is a list of ridings where a strategic vote might help topple the Tories. I am not playing favourites. My goal is to minimise Conservative winners- For example, Liberals and NDP supporters should vote for Elizabeth May in Saanich Gulf Coast, otherwise the incompetent Conservative Minister, Gary Lunn(Co-author of the Chalk River nuclear reactor fiasco) will stay in office.

This information is drawn from ThreeHundredEight.com so you can check my information. If you didn't see your riding, it is because a strategic vote probably wont make a difference. If your incumbent is NDP or Liberal, simply vote for them. Likewise, Independents. If this strategic vote pattern were followed, the NDP would gain 12 seats, the Liberals would gain 24 seats, and the Green Party would elect Elizabeth May.

The Conservative party would lose 36 seats reduced to 107 seats out of 308.
This danger, along with the difficulties of storing used and highly radioactive fuel and materials have long stymied the expansion of nuclear power. The Three Mile Island accident in the U.S. during the 1970's and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1980's pointed to the danger that nuclear energy poses. How ever, the threat from chemical & fossil fuel energies have become apparent in the last 20 years. This danger, both to human health and the global climate have suggested that the only way to power our advanced technological civilization necessarily involves more nuclear power.

The argument arises from the assertion that wind and solar power are insufficient to provide the necessary energy. Given that wind arises from solar energy– the heating and cooling of air masses by the sun's heat– how much energy actually reaches earth? And how much energy do humans use?

It is estimated that the earth receives 1.8 x 1017 Joules/s (1) or about 1.6 x 1022Joules everyday from the sun. In contrast, humans consume about 4.7 x 1020Joules(I derived this figure by converting the Tonnes of Oil equivalent provide by BP into joules). Elsewhere I have seen figures of total energy consumption a magnitude smaller. So total human energy consumption seems to range between a 1/10 of a percent and 1 percent of solar energy. So why can't we gather that energy? It would require turning over 1 percent of the earth's surface to energy production with up to 3 percent to accomodate population growth and increased demand. On the other hand, we wouldn't be injecting an extra 1 to 3 percent of the energy the planet's ecology has evolved to cope with, with the attendant pollution.

So if we want to maintain the lives we enjoy, we either have to accept the dangers of nuclear radiation or that massive changes as we incorporate solar, wind and wave power.

The thesis continues apace- starting the fifth, concluding chapter tomorrow. finishing the dense conclusions of chapters 2 & 4 today.

Had a nice German-style breakfast of sausage, strong coffee, a croissant(let's hear it for Franco-German accord!) and a german beer. Since then I've been sorta reading and napping, after putting in a good few early hours on Lefebvre's the Production of Space and the countergaming chapter from Galloway's Gaming:Essays on Algorithmic Culture. My idea is that Wafaa Bilal's Domestic Tension performance was an example of both countergaming but also subverting current museological practice(countermuseology?) by reaching an audience with no investment or indeed an active disdain for contemporary art practices. This arises from the paintball gun that was the central element of the performance acting to tie together the space produced by the overlapping of the gallery, the art community that supported Bilal in Chicago during the performance, and the space created by the web-based actions- Youtube, chatroom and remote control of the paintball gun via the internet.

Now, does that all make sense to you?adamvshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16588785302134404072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514391.post-89343488328217952182010-12-19T10:22:00.001-05:002010-12-22T12:01:18.569-05:00Average low temperatures; a global warming hypothesisIf we were to remove the Earth's atmosphere entirely, presumably its surface temperatures would resemble that of its Moon's: Daytime high of 123C(about 253 F) and lows of -233 C (-387 F). The Earth's atmosphere reflects much of that heat energy, so our average daytime temperature rarely exceeds 40 C and that same atmosphere retains the heat that does get through, so the lowest temperatures rarely exceed -40 C. In fact the average daytime temperature across the surface of the Earth is about 9C (and rising). My hypothesis is that as carbon dioxide increases in the atmosphere, heat will be retained incrementally, while daytime peaks will be somewhat mitigated as the CO2(and other greenhouse gasses) reflect some heat during the day but retain more heat overall, causing among other effects, warmer overall low temperatures.

Currently, Western Europe is suffering from a relatively cold, snowy winter. Many comments suggest that this is because the earth is getting colder. But Europeans, especially brits(I was born in Reading) live in latitudes farther north than much of Canada(Montreal sits roughly at 45 degrees N while London, UK sits at 51 N). The weather there is still currently milder than here in eastern Canada. Meanwhile, our current weather is milder than normal.

Britain, and much of western Europe have benefited from the Atlantic Conveyor, a stream of warm water flowing from the warm south Atlantic up to Europe's west coast. Most models of global warming have predicted this warm water will cease to flow due to the effects of global warming. Europe will get similar mild(for Canadians) winters as northern North America. Eventually, temperatures will all catch up, but for some, the effects will seem more ambiguous.

Since I don't have the raw data, I can only offer anecdote, but it seems to me Montreal's weather has become milder. Evening low temperatures are warmer across seasons, but the high temperatures haven't spiked as high. Winters offer warmer days but Summer days are less likely to be blisteringly hot. This is what inspired my hypothesis. Now perhaps some one can analyse the data and see if this is true.adamvshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16588785302134404072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514391.post-31713100996419857712010-12-19T07:25:00.002-05:002010-12-19T07:54:12.509-05:00ContainmentRef: Gell, Alfred "The Distributed Person" in Art and Agency. Oxford. Clarendon 1998
Externalist Theory of agency places agency in the viewer rather than what is viewed. In an idol "we can at least depict the possibility of a mind we cannot depict"(p. 132). Gell's argument is that we attribute agency- both when we look at a living person and perform idolatry with a relic. Both require a body which contains a soul. However, this system of Containment and concentricity is entirely dependent on the audience for agency, even when the audience looks into its self.adamvshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16588785302134404072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514391.post-67224563810125122042010-12-07T09:35:00.000-05:002010-12-07T09:35:29.348-05:00Betting On Climate ChangeThe evidence for the increase in global temperature and the indications that it is manmade are about as scientifically certain as to whether or not the sun will rise tomorrow. This will change our planet. It will not end life here, but it will become more difficult for many people. The worst effects will happen beyond my lifetime, and some may well be catastrophic to people and unforeseen. Using less polluting foms of energy and production seems sensible(why would you pay to make pollution? For that is what inefficient industries do when they pollute). Still we will not be able to duck the effects of what we have set in motion. However, we can look at how we can cope with these changes. Sadly, many people, especially in Africa, the Indian sub-continent and much of Central asia will suffer both from flooding due to sea level rise, and drought due diminished rain fall and diminished glacial run off as the glaciers in the Himalayas shrink.

However, the great rivers are unlikely to fail, as the Nile continues despite the encroachment of desert on its banks. So look to cities like Minneapolis, Memphis and baton Rouge to become more attractive as they are more likely to retain a reasonable supply of fresh water. Las Vegas on the other hand is not really sustainable, unless it can develop an alternative to siphoning water from the great plains. Those plains, in turn are using a non-renewable water supply. Essentially, they are drinking deeply from a great underground lake left over from the melting of the glaciers thousands of years ago. Those aquifers are rapidly being depleted.

The St.Lawrence river, flowing from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic ocean can sustain the cities on it, as long as they do not grow substantially bigger, although its water level has declined, partially because most of the water taken by Toronto, Montreal and Quebec is used, treated and returned to the river.

Some otherwise attractive cities—New Orleans and Quebec city, for example, will suffer from rising sea levels, although much of Quebec city is so elevated that if water washes over the citadel, then most of north America will be underwater. This is hardly so likely but the suburbs around it, like parts of Levis and of Beauport, as with most of New Orleans, are likely to be submerged.

Below is the list that was hysterically reported by the Toronto Sun(ohmygod the terrorists know the secret location of Toronto now). I like the way "Hydro Quebec" is listed. Do they mean the thousands of km of power grid, the huge dams located in isolated northern areas, or the cable leading to my wall socket.

These are secrets only to ordinary citizens who can't be bothered to google this information. indeed, almost all of the wikileaks cables would only be secret to citizens of the US. I am sure the taliban and ordinary Afghans know where coaltion forces have blown up both militant and innocent civilians. I presume that terrorists can think of many of these targets on their own.

The one thing the overreaction of the US and other governments reveals, is how thin skinned and/or paranoid they have become. Worse yet, given the nature of these so called secrets, it reveals that governments in the west, especially that of the United States are as afraid of their own citizens as they are of the terrorists that potentially threaten them.
Anton learned both to ride a bike and swim unassisted, and his first grade report card says he is doing well both in English and French, speaking precociously in both and learning to read both. His math skills are also coming right along.

Educationally speaking, I am coming along to, with my thesis in first draft state. Briefly it deals with how performance artist Wafaa Bilal created a space of conversation, specifically about the war in Iraq, by creating a performance that featured people chatting with him and or shooting at him with a remote controlled paintball gun via the internet. It raises issues of how we interact of the internet, and how boundary objects facilitate communication. It questions if and how conversations sparked by performance art practices can really be places of resistance, and suggests how digital games may do the same.
I am recovering from the absence of my wife, and feeling positive about my diminuated family. Overall, I am proud of having come this far in the face of such vicious betrayal and the emotional shock it dealt me.adamvshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16588785302134404072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514391.post-81378298148086174522010-11-08T09:05:00.000-05:002010-11-08T09:05:18.375-05:00NostalgiaI was reading Robert Day's article "We'll Always Have McSorley's" in The American Scholar online. It is an elegiac memoir of his time living in New York and visiting McSorley's pub. Day's writing were a nice start to this morning's thesis writing. But the ending seems almost a call to his girlfriend of the time, Lola, to meet him at McSorley's, today. Another scholar, Robert Wolff recounts how he rekindled an early romance later in life. Is there something about middle-aged scholars, or just men, that we wish to find some one who has known us so long that we are different from now until then?

With the ubiquitous presence of the internet, I never try to communicate with old flames or crushes. My name is unusual enough that they could find me in a minute via google, and contact me by email, social media or phone a moment after that. I confess I google old friends, to see what they are up to- but many have lives that don't revolve around the exchange of information virtually, and others have names that generate so many hits, it would be hard to find them.

The charge that one is a latté-slurping, ivy league, abortionating and generally miserable coward has lead to the favour of such figures as Jason Kenney, Stephen Harper, Sarah Palin, John Boehner and so on.
Perhaps the classic example of a bogey-man elite is that Skull & Bones, Yale-tutored, Massachusett's born, ex-military officer....George Bush? John Kerry? It describes both. The charge of elitism is meaningless, because it is used by people who by their very nature fall into it. Stephen Harper went to grad school, in economics and then worked in think-tanks afterwards.

Why do these people use the term? It seems to me that Stephen Harper, the Tea Party apparatchiks, et al use the term to artificially divide the polity into perceived antithetical groups so citizens don't get around to changing the system or challenging the manipulative jack-asses they have elected.

Any how, please wear my ironic slogan on t-shirts, buttons or where ever you think it will do the most good. Perhaps it will encourage people to think over the proposition that you want dumbies running your country.
adamvshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16588785302134404072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514391.post-64652767096635223762010-10-26T20:27:00.000-04:002010-10-26T20:27:39.956-04:00Headstomping freedom fighters......or Fugly Brownshirts? It seems Tim Profitt, Rand Paul's Bourbon County Coordinator, considers holding down a young women and stomping on her head, with the help of his buddies, is acceptable political discourse. Of course she disagreed them, so she must have deserved it, right??

These tea party dimwits think they should be running the US? Only because they are too jack-shit stupid, narcissistic, and ignorant to realise how truly vile they are. And none of the "leadership" has the guts to come out and condemn this.

And in one week these cowards and thugs will dominate the US congress...adamvshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16588785302134404072noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7514391.post-60695586093850817602010-10-10T10:00:00.000-04:002010-10-10T10:00:30.820-04:00American People Hire High-Powered Lobbyist To Push Interests In CongressMy favourite passage from the article:

"[Elected] Lawmakers are going to ask me, 'Why should I care about the American people? What's in it for me?' And it will be up to me and my team to find some reason why they should consider putting poverty and medical care for children on the legislative docket."
