One of my favourite bits in that book quotes a student of Benjamin Jowett, renowned Oxford scholar and notorious egotist:

“First come I; my name is Jowett
There’s no knowledge but I know it.
I am the Master of this College,
What I don’t know isn’t knowledge.”

"If I had to choose between betraying my country and betraying my friend, I hope I should have the guts to betray my country."
-E.M. Forster
